The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird is an iconic reconnaissance aircraft developed by the United States in the 1960s. Conceived during the Cold War, its primary mission was to gather intelligence while flying at extreme altitudes and speeds to avoid interception. Designed by Lockheed's Skunk Works division, the SR-71 made its first flight in 1966.
With a top speed exceeding Mach 3 (three times the speed of sound) and an operational ceiling of 85,000 feet, the Blackbird was virtually untouchable by enemy defences. Its sleek, black design minimised radar cross-section, enhancing its stealth capabilities. Throughout its service, the SR-71 provided invaluable reconnaissance data for the U.S. Air Force, remaining operational until 1998.
Renowned for its technological innovation and unmatched performance, the SR-71 Blackbird remains a symbol of advanced aeronautical engineering and a testament to Cold War-era ingenuity and determination.
