History
The SU-57 is Russia’s fifth-generation multirole stealth fighter, developed by Sukhoi to rival Western counterparts like the American F-22 and F-35. Initially known as the PAK FA during development, its maiden flight took place in 2010, and it was later designated the SU-57 in 2017. Designed for air superiority and ground attack, it incorporates stealth technology, super cruise capability, and advanced avionics. The programme faced delays due to technical challenges and budget constraints, slowing its deployment. The SU-57 entered limited service with the Russian Air Force in late 2020. It represents a significant step in modernising Russia’s air combat capabilities, although full-scale production and operational readiness are still in progress. Its export version, the SU-75 Checkmate, is currently under development.
