History.
The F-117 Nighthawk, developed by Lockheed's Skunk Works, was the world's first operational stealth aircraft. Designed during the Cold War, it emerged as a solution to evade advanced radar systems. Officially unveiled in 1988, the aircraft was shrouded in secrecy, with its maiden flight taking place in 1981. Its distinctive angular design minimised radar detection, employing groundbreaking stealth technology. The Nighthawk first saw combat in the 1989 Panama invasion and later played a pivotal role in the Gulf War of 1991, demonstrating precision strike capabilities. Despite its success, it was retired in 2008 due to advancing technology and the introduction of more versatile platforms like the F-22 Raptor. The F-117 remains an iconic symbol of aviation innovation.
